Brief History of New York
The origins of New York can be traced back to 1625 when the area was settled by the Dutch who set up a commercial trading post.
Soon after the Dutch purchased Manhattan Islands from the native Indians.
In the 17th century, New York was surrendered to the English.
New York has held the mantle of the US's largest city since 1790 it briefly acted as the capital between 1785 and 1790.
New York has grown to become a global powerhouse in commerce and finance, as well as hosting the New York Stock exchange and the headquarters of the United Nations.
The city is popularly known as The Big Apple. The nickname was coined by touring jazz musicians of the 1930s who used the slang expression "apple" for any town or city. Playing in New York City became known as playing the The Big Apple.
